Bio - Naomi Mawson

Australian Photographer, Naomi Mawson is quickly developing a reputation for creative emotive portraiture that captures the very essence of her subjects.
While somewhat of a latecomer to photography Naomi's passion for creating imagery began with a career in the Film and Television industry where she freelanced as a make up artist for many years in Australia and the UK.
As a mother of a young family, Naomi's passion for photography was later sparked in 2003 by a love of photographing children and in particular a Secret Garden inspired image she created for her daughter who at the time wouldn't leave the house without her fairy skirt and wings (pink of course). To her surprise she found that portraiture came naturally.
It was obvious to those around her that she had something special so with much encouragement from family and friends Naomi embarked on a journey that ultimately led her to starting her own photography business, Secret Garden Photography.
Naomi is inspired by the challenge of capturing her subjects individual personalities. She uses natural light and incorporates rich textures and interesting structures into her backgrounds. This combined with her rapport with her subjects, especially children, results in unique examples of photographic portraiture.
In 2007 Naomi exhibited her Ophelia's Garden Series. Drawing inspiration for the 19th century Pre-Raphaeites, and the character of Ophelia in Shakespeare's Hamlet, Naomi portrays a modern Ophelia and captures an essence of powerful feminine strength. Many of these works leave the viewer wondering whether the are looking at a painting or a photograph.
